Those Roots Within: The interceptions of Deaf and hearing cultures

By Desirée Zagbai Exploring the intersection of minority identities and immigration, “Those Roots Within” is a contemporary dance duet that creates a unique dialogue between Deaf and Hearing experiences. Co-created by Alida Esmail, Hodan Youssouf, and Sophia Wright, the performance featured Youssouf, a Deaf theatre artist, and Esmail, a hearing dance and theatre artist, as they navigate the complexities of shared stage and divergent truths. The passing of Dennis James

On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, a great voice and entertainer, Dennis James, was laid to rest after a short battle with cancer. Left to mourn is his wife and companion of over fifty years, Mildred James (née Douglas). Also mourning his passing are his children: daughter Kimberly and sons Dennis Jr. and Devaughn. His surviving siblings include Joan, Horris, and Robert, along with his grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. Dennis James was born on the island of St. Lucia to parents Adriana “Addie” James from Guyana and Lawrence James from Bequia, St. Vincent. He was the eighth of ten children. Dennis …

Reggae history and Montreal’s vibrant sound system culture will be the main focus at The String Up, a new exhibition by the Afrosonic Innovation Lab launching on Feb. 7, 2025 at the National Film Board in Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles . Black Physicians of Canada wins $240K in health equity

  On Dec. 3, 2024, the healthcare company Novartis Canada announced that the non-profit organization Black Physicians of Canada (BPC) won $240,000 for its health equity initiative. BPC will use the funds to improve health equity for Black communities in Canada. BPC aims to build a community of Black physicians and physicians in training. Its goal is to empower these positions through mentorship and advice on advocacy, support, representation and more.
