Tributes and music for milestone event

Rosie Awori (LJI) It promises to be an evening of highlights when the Antigua & Barbuda Association of Montreal hosts its grand 40th Anniversary of Independence celebration on Saturday, November 20. Among the many high points promised for the evening is a tribute to 99-year-old Dr. Ruby Lake-Richards, who holds the distinction of being the first female graduate and is today, the only surviving alumni of the University of The West Indies inaugural Class of 1967. Caribbean countries under pressure from COVID-19

Over the past month or two, COVID-19 has been putting a beating on the Caribbean. With infections and fatalities skyrocketing at unbelievable rates in several countries across the region, the outbreaks are stoking fear that some healthcare systems might cripple under the strain of the mutating corona virus. In North America, authorities are cautioning travellers to stay away from Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy and Bermuda, all now categorized as having a “Level 4” or “very high” rate of transmission over the past 28 days. Celebrate Emancipation Day virtually on Aug.1

The prime ministers of several Caribbean islands will share messages of empowerment on Sunday August 1, when the Caribbean Coalition Network of Montreal hosts it first major event, a virtual Emancipation Day Celebration. The Coalition Network was formed last July when representatives from several of the city’s island associations including Barbados, Guyana, St. Vincent and Grenadines, Montserrat, Grenada and Jamaica began laying the groundwork. The idea back then was to use individual resources to support each other, to coordinate on events and if called upon, speak on issues of common interest.
