Love, they say, is a many-splendored thing, but it can also be a complicated thing.
Throw in the complexities that certain cultures and ethnic groups bring to the journey and we can well be on our way to a strange place.
Award-winning playwright Anne-Marie Woods offers a fresh and nuanced look at the emotional journey in her new play She Said/He Said, which is described as “a spoken word and theatre experience that explores love, communication and relationships between Black men and Black women.”
The way she puts it, is that it’s an opportunity to add her voice to the universal subject.
“I could sit around and complain about the plight of the Black woman and being single for hours… but that makes no sense to me. However, creating a script that poetically challenges the conventions of traditional theatre – that makes sense does,” says playwright Woods, an award-winning multi-disciplinary artist with roots in England and Trinidad.
She Said/He Said, which will be directed by BTW’s artistic director Quincy Armorer, is billed as “an intimate, musical and creative collision of theatre and spoken word.”
And will be staged by Black Theatre Workshop between April 13-May 1 at Montréal Art Interculturels, starring two up-and-coming Montreal actors Mariah Inger and Christian Paul.
After its debut in Montreal, She Said/He Said will be featured in STAGES Theatre Festival in Nova Scotia.
Black Theatre Workshop presents She Said/He Said by Anne-Marie Woods from April 13-May 1, 2016 from Wednesday-Saturday at 8:00pm with Sunday matinees at 3:00pm. There will be a $15 preview on April 13 at 8:00pm.
