The Jamaican Canadian Community Women’s League of Montreal celebrates 15 years

The spotlight was fixed on Ms. Ivyline Fleming as a lineup of politicians and leaders of organizations joined a cross-section of Montrealers to pay tribute to the lifelong community worker and advocate who in her mid-80s is hinting at retirement.
Speaking to a roomful of friends and supporters in the Paris Lounge of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on the 15th Anniversary of the organization she founded, The Jamaican Canadian Community Women’s League of Montreal, Ms Fleming suggested that she might be entering the tail end of her decades of community service.
She talked about landing in Montreal over 56 years ago and almost immediately joining the struggle for justice and human rights as a member of the Negro Citizenship Association. For many years, Ms. Fleming was also a stalwart member of the Jamaica Association of Montreal.
Before founding the JCCWLM, which provided a platform for the empowerment of women, and provided thousands of dollars in scholarships to college and vocational students.
The event included tributes from Snowdon city councilor, Marvin Rotrand, NDG/CDN Borough Mayor Russell Copeman, and community member Simon Spencer, with a feature address by Mrs. Jean Powell, a retired nurse now residing in Toronto.
