On Saturday, October 29, a wide cross-section of Montrealers together with friends and relatives gathered at the Il Gabbiano Reception Hall in LaSalle to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Bibleway Pentecostal Church.
The evening was filled with music, joyful fellowship and a walk through the history of one of the oldest institutions in our community.
The church, which was built by Reverend St. Clair Knights, a pioneering preacher and community advocate out of Trinidad and Tobago, found an early congregation among the women who migrated here under the Canadian Domestic Scheme.
It quickly became the hub of activities for these women and their families and soon housed the community’s first child-care center and senior’s home.
The evening’s celebration included testimonies from some of the original members of the church and a moving message from Pastor Roslyn McKenzie. Sister Jennifer Tomlinson assisted in putting together an engaging documentary and photo display.
A 50th Anniversary Plaque was presented to Egbert Gaye for the efforts of Montreal Community CONTACT in serving the community.
And special tribute was paid to Molly Ann Knights, one of the children of the founder for her continued contributions to building Bibleway and for her efforts in enhancing community life.
The evening was enhanced by music from the famed Gospel Heralds, a group with its foundation at the church, with group leader Clarence Jones, doing yeoman services as master of ceremonies.
Several past members and their families travelled from across Canada and the USA to be part of the milestone. And there was a special welcome to Thomas Neepush and the congregation of Leaving Water Assembly from Mistisstini in northern Quebec, whose foundation is tied to Bibleway.
