It may be the d
ead of winter, but many Grade 11 students are already looking forward to the event pop culture has turned into the crowning moment of one’s high school career: prom.
The night is often the glitziest and most extravagant soiree a teenager will attend in their life to date, but for some that luxury is out of reach.
Enter #SheDidThat, an initiative started by two Montreal women who have been friends since they themselves were high school students.
Now in their late 20s, Tamraa Greenidge and Katrina Nurse started the project last year to give one young Montrealer the chance to have an all expenses paid prom experience. From the hair to the makeup, the dress to the shoes, the limo ride to the photos to capture it all, Greenidge and Nurse enlist some of the best in their crafts to help one lucky teenager have a night she’ll always remember.
Prospective participants must be 16 or 17 years old, of African-American or West Indian decent, have an overall average of at least 80 per cent on their most recent report card and write a 500-word essay explaining they believe they deserve to win.
Applications can be downloaded from their Facebook page (http://on.fb.me/1w17KOJ) and must be received, via email at shedidthatprom@gmail.com, no later than Sunday March 1 at 8:00 p.m.
