Dr. Alwin Spence
It was no surprise that as soon as President Biden, because of pressure from his own party, because of the widening divide in the party, and because of the resulting imminent handing of the Presidency on a platter, toasted with the best wine, and the resulting demise of American Democracy, came to his senses, declared he was not seeking a second term in office, and most importantly endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next President of the United States, America, America woke up from its slumber and became energized, doing the right things. The Democrats became quickly united while the Republicans, scared as a cat, rushed back to the drawing board to replace old lies with new ones and old strategies with new ones to defeat the best challenger one could find, to save America from the backward moves of the Republican Party.
Fellow Canadians, fellow Jamaicans, fellow Americans, from my observation watching and reading about the choice of V.P. Harris, the daughter of a Jamaican father and a South Asian mother, the first woman, the first Black American, and the first Asian American, to hold the distinguished position of Vice President of the illustrious and most powerful country in the world.
I have no choice but to be proud of her. I write as a Jamaican and also as a Canadian who is a neighbour of the U.S. I am also an only son with a great mother and three lovely sisters who showered love on me. This is even more reason for my support for the Vice President, and for her to overwhelmingly move up to Washington and occupy the Presidential chair for at least four years.
IT’S NOT THE COLOUR OF THE SKIN.
My whole-hearted support and best wishes are not only founded on the colour of her skin, or her open association with her ethnic origin, but more-so the context and contents of her mind which is colourless and sexless. The world’s her stage and the upliftment of humanity is her demonstrated passion. That is all she must continue to be.
The Vice President did not suddenly have a dream about the White House and woke up being there as second-in-command.
Hard work, on behalf of others, and not selfishly for her own promotion, brought her there.
She is a graduate of our own Westmount High School in Montreal, then to Howard University, a very famous Black
college, for her undergraduate degree. She further studied at the University of California, Law School. She was very active at Howard with the student civil rights movement. This she must have inherited from her parents who took their daughter in her stroller to several civil right marches at that young age. Her identity with both Black and Asian communities must be admired.
THE FIRST……. As a woman, as a Black American, as an Asian American, as the Vice President of the United States. Keep tuning in as she breaks new grounds.
After graduating from Law School, V.P. Harris was appointed deputy District Attorney in Oakland, California, where she prosecuted cases of gang violence, drug trafficking and sexual abuse. She was known for her toughness in fighting crime.
Elected in 2010 as Attorney General of all California, and in 2017 elected as a U.S. Senator. She was a member of the Black Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific Caucus. As a leading advocate of social justice and reform, this might have caught the attention of President Biden who promptly named her as His Vice President in 2021. This journey will end in her election as President of the United States. The enthusiasm she has shown, tells us all that she is capable, energized and ready to walk another long mile. Is she up to the job? YES, SHE IS!
CROWNED AND ENDORSED.
President Biden made the first move to appoint her as his V.P., and then to endorse her candidacy for President. President Obama and his wife Michelle have also come out in support of her and are willing to be active in helping her to reach her goal. But what was most unexpected and admirable, was the very recent endorsement from the oldest living past president, Mr. Jimmy Carter. He took time-out from his hospital bed where he is hoping to celebrate his 100th. birthday on Oct. 1. He is hoping that he will still be here, alive and well so he could vote for V.P Harris. President Carter is also known for his great humanitarian work. (remember Habitat for Humanity). With these three Presidents, V.P. Harris is in good and great company, capable of outdistancing his opponent. However, caution must be carefully maintained. Beware of the cunning fox. Two things V.P. Harris seems to cherish and use as a guide and mentor. She has always quoted what her mother once told her.
” My mother would look at me and she’d say,
Kamala, you may be the first to do many things,
But make sure you are not the last.” Watch her live out this advice.
In her acceptance speech for one of her many appointments, she said, ‘At every step of the way,
I’ve been guided by the words I spoke from the first time I spoke in a courtroom. Kamala Harris for the people “.
With much respect, as the saying goes, GO GIRL, GOOO!
She has already signed her side of the Covenant, Harris for the people. Now America, it is your turn to sign,
America for Harris.
BEST WISHES FROM THE CONTACT, AND FROM CANADA.
