An opportunity to say thanks
Organizers extend a big ‘thank-you’ all who attended the Independence Cocktail held on Saturday, August 6 at the Jamaican Association Hall.
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of cash prizes to winners of the essay competition sponsored by The Jamaica Gleaner Corporation. The competition focused on young adults expressing what aspect of Jamaican culture they felt is the best.
Angel Roulez took first place for her essay on music, while Justice Manly placed second with his essay on food.  Janice Dayle, the Gleaner’s Montreal representative handed out the prizes.  Organizers also thanked all who participated.

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to three long standing members of the association, past president Mr. Noel Alexander, treasurer Mr. Aston Mendez and board member Mr. Lloyd Shaw for their many years of service and dedication to the Association.
Guests had a chance to share in the fun by participating in a quizzed on aspects of Jamaican life and one winner took home a gift basket full of Jamaican delights from the Tourist Board, which together with Louise Paquette provided the questions to the “Jamaican Jeopardy” game.
West Can Folk Performing Company was on hand to perform a dance tribute to Jamaica that provoked cheers of joy and pride among the crowd.  Trevor Campbell also known as DJ TLC provided music for the evening
Organizers are also inviting Montrealers to visit Association for their upcoming events including the Uptown Reggae Nights on Friday September 2 with Juliet Nelson, Kaisha Lee and Sweetz.  Then on Saturday, November 5, the association will be hosting our Heroes Banquet and honoring (ret.) Police Chief Devon Clunis of Winnipeg amongst many other activities.
