It was indeed a gala evening as hundreds of Montréal, including several municipal politicians and other political types, joined members of the Jamaican Canadian Community Women’s League of Montreal for their pre-Christmas do at the Quality Hotel in Dorval on Saturday, November 29.
The evening was highlighted by a presentation of awards to three deserving Montrealers for their achievements and contributions to our community and to the city.
Long-serving educator, Mr. Osborne Allen who founded the Cote des Neiges Child Care Centre over forty two years ago, and built it into one of Montreal’s most successful early education institutions, was recognized for his work. As was Ms. Mary Deros, city councilor for Park Extension and currently serving as Associate Mayor of the City of Montreal who, for much of her tenure, has built lasting connections and fruitful relationships with the community.
An award of recognition was also presented to Clement Walker for his service to our community as an educator and community worker, in addition to his enduring contributions on the local entertainment circuit.
Another special feature of the event was the recognition of 91-year-old Mrs. Iris Samuels for her lasting support of the JCCWLM and other community initiatives.
As usual, the organization handed out a bursary to a deserving university student. Ms. Trina Browne Fowlin who is completing her BA at Concordia University was this year’s recipient.
Event organizer Ms Ivyline Flemming, who is also the long-serving president of the JCCWLM, took the opportunity to offer a stirring address on her many years of community work, and for others to see the benefit of volunteering.
Brian Smith hosted the evening and TLC supplied the music.
