Many believe in fairytales, Santa Claus and elves and many even refer to something many call
“the magic of Christmas”; but this Christmas I want to redirect your attention to the splendor of Christmas which is really the wonder of a wonderful God. God is a spirit and has angels and cherubs who operate in the supernatural.
Throughout the Christmas stories in the Bible we see many accounts of encounters with angelic beings who have made themselves known in order to accomplish a mission in the earth and to deliver messages. Angels are beings of authority. They are messengers, they are warriors and for lack of a better term; I would call them secret agents of the kingdom of God.
Let us remember this Christmas season that angels are real. Angels were on assignment then and Angels are on assignment now.
Mary, the mother of Jesus was visited by an angel with an assignment to deliver the Word of promise and life. She agreed with the angel’s message and replied “let it be unto me according to thy word”.
The angel had the details and explanations for her questions. “How can this seemingly impossible thing happen?” and “What do I do now?”. The answers were just as incredible as the mission. “With God all things are possible” replies the angel “… and your cousin Elizabeth who is well advanced in age and who had been barren also had an angelic visitation and she is now pregnant and will soon bear a son in her old age”. Go spend time with her, said the Angel to Mary.
The amazing thing is that both husbands were also visited by an angel. Joseph, Mary’s fiancé and Zachariah Elizabeth’s husband; each had their own encounter with one of God’s top messengers.
In fact, Zachariah doubted the words of the angel. He had good reason to doubt the message because it was naturally impossible given both he and his wife had both already gone through what some call “the change of life”.
Though he had good reasons to doubt; he needed good faith to accept and partner with the angel as Mary did.
Did the angel go back with his word of promise due to Zachariah’s doubt? No, the angel had enough authority to pronounce a judgment on the man. Do you see how angels have a mission to complete and a duty to ensure that their assignment is carried out?
The mission is priority number one. This is why the angel dealt with Zachariah so harshly because his doubt and lack of faith could have jeopardized the mission. In the end, God gave him a redeeming opportunity to partner with His mission by using Zachariah to confirm the plan when relatives did not believe his wife.
Joseph’s experiences with angels were also interventions to prevent interference with the plan of God. Joseph received instructions to move his family out of harm’s way with specific instructions on which country to relocate to. Isn’t God awesome?
Readers, as Christmas time approaches I encourage you to recognize that there is no magic in Christmas but there is a loving God who sent his Word to dwell among us and become the light of the world.
It is that love, that light, that hope, that redemption that makes Christmas time so very special.
Christmas is a special time because there was so much supernatural power released in the earth during that time. Angels speaking directly to people, angels in the field with shepherds, angels in the skies singing; angels all around.
Hebrews 1:7-14: In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.” Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
Bless the LORD, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word! Psalms 103:20.
The most amazing thing is that angels are still all around us doing the will of the Lord and doing wonderful things. This is the wonder of Christmas!
Merry Christmas and Happy new year!
Love
