QBBE: A heritage organization positioned for the future

In 1968, when the Quebec Board of Black Educators (QBBE) was established, the community as we know it today was taking root. The influx of immigrants from the Caribbean and elsewhere was adding to the population of Blacks and heightening the need for institutions to assist in consolidating their place in a society that was not truly accommodating. Among the objectives of the QBBE was to advocate on behalf English speaking students entangled in a system in which they were stunted by faulty perceptions and low expectations. For the educators who were the founders of the organization, high school dropout …

Mickey Stanley is on the mend after freak accident in Barbados

It has been a grueling couple of weeks for family and friends of Michael Stanley, a well-known Montrealer who on December 21, was seriously injured in a vehicular accident in Barbados. The incident, which took place just outside the home Stanley shares with his wife, is described as a “freak accident.” He was sitting in car in the driveway of his house waiting on his wife Margareta Brathwaite and obviously blacked-out. Witnesses reported seeing the car careening down the short, dead-end street in front of his house and striking a gas-meter just moments before it plummeted down a 40-foot precipice. …

Provinces scrambling TO STEM SPIKE IN COVID-19 numbers

Rosie Awori (LJI) There he goes again: Black this, black that. Black, black, black, black… ad infinitum. Sure it may be irritating to some… but being Black is my identity, my daily reality. It’s the first thing that comes to mind just about everyday I awake. And it’s not a burden, but a reason to live… in spite of these COVID-19 times. Once I open my eyes it’s a good thing. I roll out of bed and do my daily spiritual exercise — say a little prayer for being blessed with another day of life — then walk to the …

Quebec’s Youth Protection—A Deadly Reflection

The late Indian lawyer and political ethicist Mahatma Mohandas Gandhi is quoted as saying, “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” Such a statement rings true following the recent death in Laval of a seven year old girl. Once again, yet another death has brought to the surface the deplorable state of Quebec’s youth protection system. Sad but true only death brings the system under scrutiny, of which it is no stranger. Solutions have been proposed on how to fix the problem, but nothing substantial has been imposed. In October …
