Trini and J’ca: about crime and music

Production Sounds new

Let me give you a quick update on some of the most talked about topics in Trinidad & Tobago, as well as Jamaica.
The #1 topic in Trinidad & Tobago is the crime rate. Trinis like to say God is a Trinidadian but, with Trinidad and Tobago recording 478 murders in 2016, and with the toll so far in 2017 at 106, it seems like the devil is vacationing there.
As for Jamaica, the main topic is Vybz Kartel. Yes, his freedom is now maybe a reality with an appeal trial underway.
Trinidad & Tobago’s crime situation has become so overbearing that the U.S. State Department updated its travel advisory for Trinidad and Tobago warning its [U.S.] citizens about the deteriorating crime situation on the islands, particularly in and around Port of Spain.
Gladly, the crime did not hinder the 2017 Carnival celebrations, but rather went on a timely pause. Now murders and robberies are at its peak, so much so that Trinidad’s artists are currently being affected.
One of the most recent and most talked about murders in Trinidad and Tobago is the killing of 22-year-old female police officer Nayasha Joseph. Her corpse was fished out of the waters of the Guf of Paria on March 15.
Not only was Nayasha Joseph a police officer and a mother of a four-year-old daughter, but also Soca artist Devon “Lyrikal’s” younger cousin.
Lyrikal is not the only entertainer to be directly affected by the crime situation in Trinidad & Tobago. In February, Roy Cape’s lead vocalist Dexter “Blaxx” Stewart had to cope with the murder of his sister-in-law, 27-year-old Jamilia De Revenaux who was murdered at Movie Towne recreation.
Even popular Trinidadian reggae artist Brendan “Isasha” Young was robbed by two men armed with guns in front of his house in La Horquetta. They took his gold chain, cash and cellphone.
Great news for Vybz Kartel as Justice Frank Williams handed down perhaps the most crucial ruling in the appeal process, giving Vybz Kartel’s attorneys the go ahead to proceed with a full appeal. Kartel’s attorney, Thomas Tavares-Finson said that the judge read through all of  the court documents and feels confident that there are grounds to  appeal the controversial conviction.
“It’s the first critical step in the appeal process,” his lawyer said. While this is only the beginning stage of the appeal, the ruling is an important step to boost Vybz Kartel’s moral and reinforce what his lawyers have been saying about the numerous problems with the murder case.
