Montreal’s emerging star of stage Lucinda Davis will take on the central role in the Black Theatre Workshop and Imago Theatre presentation of the Canadian premiere of random, a play by award-winning U.K. playwright debbie tucker green, directed by Micheline Chevrier.
The play which tells the story of a Black family whose lives are forever changed by a tragic act of violence, is described as “offering a human perspective on the prevalence of youth violence targeted at men in Black communities” and will bring to the fore Davis’s exceptional talent as she portrays myriad characters in “ a hard-hitting, spoken word-inspired dramatic style.”
Davis recently earned a META (Montreal English Theatre Award) for her performance in Harlem Duet.
random is inspired by a series of what has been described as “arbitrary instance of knife violence targeted at young men in Black communities in London, England in 2008.”
It copped a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award.
According to Quincy Armorer, Artistic Director of Black Theatre Workshop, random is the perfect project for Imago and BTW to collaborate on. It is a powerful story, told from the female perspective, about current concerns at the heart of the Black community, but which resonates within us all. It is also a great vehicle to showcase a talented Black actress, which we have in Lucinda Davis.
random runs from March 18th-April 4th at the MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) on 3680 rue Jeanne-Mance from Wednesday-Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 3pm.
