To kick off the New Year, the Black Theatre Workshop in association with the Segal Centre, is presenting “Master Harold…” and the Boys.
Written by acclaimed South African playwright, Athol Fugard, the play will hit the Segal stage for an extensive run, beginning January 21 to February 11, 2018.
Regarded by many in the world of theatre as South Africa’s pre-eminent playwright, the Dora Award-winning production, one of Fugard’s most powerful plays, is a retrospective of his life and experiences growing up in South Africa during the heady days of apartheid, and fuelled by events of the day: corruption, systemic racism and its inherent manifestations, all converging and compounding, eventually exploding…
Also collaborating on the production of “Master Harold…and the Boys” is multi-award-winning director Philip Akin of the Shaw Festival in partnership with Toronto’s Obsidian Theatre. They borrow from Fugard’s South African experiences, weaving them into contemporary American society in the age of Donald Trump’s America and what has been emerging (politically, socially, racial and social animus, isolation and marginalization) since his elevation to the position of president of the United States.
Athol Fugard’s other plays include My Children My Africa! Blood Knot, Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Road to Mecca. And he has also acted in a handful of films, including Tsotsi, Gandhi, and The Killing Fields… but “Master Harold…and the Boys” is believed by many to be his best work.
Said Segal Centre Artistic and Executive Director, Lisa Rubin, “We are proud and excited to bring this extraordinary production to Montreal. It’s one of the finest pieces of theatre I’ve ever seen…”
