Black History Month Special Presentation

By Gemma Raeburn-Baynes

On February 3, for Black History Month 2018, Grenada-born and Toronto-based pianist Eddie Bullen will bring his virtuosity to the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall, together with his son, Quincy, for an exciting musical evening of dueling pianos.
Organizers say it’s an opportunity to explore and enjoy the music and story of a father and son’s journey to keep alive the family tradition of musical excellence.
The show will feature the Bullens’ extraordinary interpretations of some of the best-loved jazz and contemporary music, highlighted by their captivating musical arrangements and sprinkled by interesting and amusing commentary about the father-son relationship and their unique family history.
They will relive key moments that shaped their bond as the father pushes his son to be the best that he can be, no matter the odds. It promises to be a testimony of how music can be used to bring families together.
Eddie Bullen, a noted pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer has enjoyed a lengthy career, which is said to have “yielded an abundance of awards and recognition for his outstanding talent.”
With his clearly defined interpretation of contemporary jazz, flavored with Caribbean and Latin rhythms, he has several well-received albums under his belt, including his first, ‘Nocturnal Affair’, released many years ago to his most recent Spice Island.
The twenty-two-year-old Quincy follows in the footsteps of his father and has become an experienced, adept keyboardist who puts a charming spin on all his performances. He has been wowing audiences across Ontario and the Caribbean with his unique style of jazz with a funky vibe. His repertoire includes his own version of popular standards from jazz, R&B and Soul, as well as his original compositions.
