Dancehall Stars Making News

Production Sounds newMaybe I’ve been covering a bit more Soca this past summer but that’s how it is in the summer, Soca music and Caribbean carnivals are all over North America.
For Dancehall and Reggae fans, there is still a lot going on.
It’s hard to overstate the impact that the small Caribbean island of Jamaica has had on music and pop culture worldwide, and Reggae/Dancehall music has been no small part of that legacy.

Popcaan and Alkaline Up For MOBO Award this year.

We recently learned that two of the biggest names in Dancehall, Popcaan and Alkaline, are among the five artists nominated for this year’s MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin).
Both Popcaan and Alkaline have had a great year last year and have also been making waves in the dancehall space this year. This marks the fifth nomination for the “Unruly” deejay, Popcaan and the second nod for Alkaline.
Only three reggae artists (Spice, Sylvia Tella and Etana) have ever received a MOBO nomination in the Best Reggae Act category.
The MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin) have become Europe’s leading urban music brand and supports a huge variety of genres not just at the annual Awards but all year round.
This award has played an instrumental role in elevating black music and culture to mainstream popular status in the UK.
This year the 21st Annual awards takes place on Friday, November 4th at the iconic SSE Hydro in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Movado and Popcaan beef finally over?
For those who were in the dark about the musical war between Movado and Popcaan.  Both artists have been engaged in a lyrical showdown since the start of the summer. The first real sign of a beef between the two sides came when Popcaan released a single in July “We Still A Win (World Cup),” which is a direct response to Movado’s smash hit single “Big League.”
Things went downhill from there on with both artists engaging in a social media spat before releasing a handful of diss tracks. If you attended the 2016 MIRF you heard Movado address the situation as well. Popcaan has recently apologized on Social Media but yet Movado is brutal and still dissing Popcaan even after his apology. Movado laughed off Popcaan recent apology posted on his Instagram page and unleashed a new diss track “Dem Fraid” signaling that their beef is not yet over.
