After a successful first year, the Generation Gap project will be resuming in the fall of next year, says Carole Sandy, facilitator of the program, which is geared towards increasing the number of visible minority students in the field of social work.
“Last year we had a lot of interested applicants and I’m proud to report that we now have two successful candidates pursuing studies in the care giving profession,“ she said.
Sandy, who is a clinical counselor and graduate of the school of social work at McGill University, is looking for visible minority students for the Fall 2019 program.
“I believe that the Generation Gap Project will help participants learn how to identify on-going issues that create barriers and give them the tools to effectively interpret and reflect on those issues, and also give them a means to provide support for marginalized populations,” Sandy states.
“Increasing the number of visible minority students in the field of social work begins with providing meaningful conversations and a supportive environment. The field of social work, like many other health care professions, flourishes when diversity is strongly represented and encouraged.”
The Generational Gap Project aims to help students explore, strengthen, and broaden their understanding of life experiences.
The criteria to participate is to be in the process of completing or have completed a DEC, have been away from studies for a number of years, or simply have a strong interest in the field and they would want to pursue an undergraduate degree in social work and participate in the Generational Gap Project.
Candidates will have to commit to participating for a total of one year. Within this time, they will attend 5-7 live workshops at McGill University School of Social Work and meet with their coach once a month via phone or Skype.
Candidates will also receive support with their application (resume and essay—personal statement and analysis of a social problem).
