For the last four years, a team of women from the community have worked to make sure a few high schoolers have the prom night of their dreams.
She Did That Prom is an initiative run by Tamraa Greenidge, Katrina Nurse and Tish Mclean who wanted to provide a deserving young lady with an all-expense paid prom.
In 2016, they started the male version, called #TheClassicMan.
Winners are treated to a full makeover – hair, makeup, dress or suit, shoes, professional photography and free transportation to their prom.
But it’s no handout – the entrants must have an overall average of 80 per cent or more in their report card, and write a 500-word essay explaining why they deserve the support, to win.
Former Beurling Academy student Danté Jeremiah-Germann was this year’s female winner. She said she hesitated when she learned the contest is open to students across Montreal, but later decided to give it a shot.
Little did she know she had everything it took to win. When she found out, she and her mother were both elated.
“I was shocked and happy at the same time because at the moment I was going through a rough time and that was the beginning of my rainbow at the end of a storm,” said Jeremiah-Germann, who is now studying health sciences at Dawson College.
Troy Jones, a former Riverdale High School student and the male winner, said a family friend, convinced he had the qualities that would make him the winner, told him to apply.
He said he was truly grateful to win, since it helped take some financial pressure off his mother.
“It was a great experience, from meeting the wonderful women who made She Did That Prom, to finding my suit and then making it to the day where I pulled up to the prom, one of the best feelings I’ve had in my life,” he said.
With the money his mother saved, she was able to pay for him to play on a basketball team this summer. Troy wants to become a physiotherapist or personal trainer.
The contest organizers say they are grateful for all the donations they’ve received and for those who attended their Zumba and Paint Night fundraiser.
They also want to thank their sponsors: WIBCA, Louis Tetreault, Bestbite Catering, Ahamard R. Lowe Photography, Tres Bougie Nail Technician, Minevia Spa Hair Services, and Biano Real Estate, and makeup artist Heather Jones, who has been with them since day 1.
