Richard Young, of Trinidad and Tobago, has established himself as a world-class stylist and designer. And in his more than two decades in the industry has become one of the leading voices on styles, aesthetics and cultural identity in Caribbean fashion.
This spring he will be bringing his know-how to the city as creative director of the Montreal Caribbean Fashion Week, which runs from April 20 – 23.
Young, who has amassed extensive acclaim as a stylist, production designer, fashion coordinator and prolific impresario, has led him to become one of the most sought after creative consultants in the Caribbean. He will share his knowledge and passion for fashion in a four-hour workshop on Thursday, April 20, on a range of topics including: An overview of Caribbean Style, The Essence of Caribbean Fashion and the Caribbean Aesthetic – Fashioning through Cultural identity.
Event organizers say it’s a special outreach not only to Montreal fashionistas, but also to students and all interested in the creative process of the beauty and fashion industry and beyond, to include explorations in animation, visual art, culinary arts and performing and theatre arts.
Fashion designers, professional models and aspiring models will learn how to put their best foot forward.
Young, who is a judge for the popular Caribbean’s Next Top Model says, “The workshop will discuss how culture, history and geography impacted on regional fashion sensibilities and continues to reveal ancillary style features of our imaging mores.”
And “will explore ‘inspiration’ elements and techniques as they apply to crafting fashion trends and cultivating style…”
The object, organizers say, is to “sensitize participants of the principles of Caribbean fashion culture, and also address regional costuming and Carnival arts pertaining to the creation of couture.”
For the past 25 years, Young has been running his event management/production and design company, and has been working consistently throughout the Caribbean, South America, Miami, New York, Toronto and Montreal.
Workshops will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. at Art Galerie 203 located at 227 Notre Dame Street, West.

Guyana Day 2017
All roads lead to Ottawa on Sunday, May 21, to join the Guyanese-Canadian Community for Guyana Day 2017, in celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation and Guyana’s 51st Anniversary of independence.
Under the theme, Enhancing the Awareness of Guyana in Canada’s Sesquicentennial Year, Guyana Day 2017 will be held under the patronage of H. E. Clarissa Riehl, High Commissioner of the Republic of Guyana to Canada.
This collaborative event between the Guyana High Commission, the Guyana Consulate Toronto and Guyanese Diaspora communities from Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal will be held at the Horticulture Building in the City of Ottawa’s Lansdowne Urban Park, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Free of charge to the public.
The event will feature an exciting program of activities including:
* Informative displays by Guyana Tourism and Go-lnvest
* Exhibitions of Guyanese arts and crafts
* (A food court) Guyanese-Canadian manufactured products
* Children’s interactive activities
* A cultural showcase featuring outstanding local and Guyana-based entertainers
Guyana Day 2017 will replace the Annual Guyana Festival for this year only.

Angélique, the epic play written by Canadian playwright Lorena Gale chronicling the life of Marie Joseph Angélique, an enslaved Black woman who was publicly executed for having allegedly set fire to Montréal in 1734, continues at The Studio, Segal Centre for the Performing Arts, 5170 Côte St. Catherine. It runs until APRIL 2, 2017
The play is a co-production of Black Theatre Workshop and Tableau D’Hôte Theatre and features Jenny Bizard, Tristan Lalla, Dala Comtois, Karl Grabosas, Chip Chuipka, Olivier Lamarche and France Rolland. It’s direct by Mike Payette.
