The goings-on among the women and some men who frequent hairdressing and beauty salons, where humour, social bonding and excesses in informalities are the order of the day, have been a source of inspiration for countless films and books.
Hazel Isaacs and Emon Gordon know a lot about it and are making it their business to make sure that when their clients leave Divine Beauty, they too are filled with contentment and the joy of  fellowship.
Just don’t expect idle chatter and gossip when you walk through the doors of their salon which recently opened at 6094  Sherbrooke Street in NDG, because the two young hair stylists say they are convinced that these days people, especially women, need words of support, empowerment and encouragement more than anything else.
“It’s not about preaching,” says Emon, a married mother of  one. “And it’s not about us, it’s about our clients for whom we have great respect and wouldn’t want to impose ourselves on them.”
The St. Vincent-born duo, staunch members of Christ Embassy Church in Cote des Neiges, say they always have a biblical verse or reference on hand if the conversation drifts into that direction.
Emon and Hazel are also building their new business (it opened last October) on the bedrock principle of their and are convinced that they will see them through these difficult days facing all enterprises.
“We can say with conviction that it’s not only about the money,” says Hazel, a resident braiding specialist, whose skills at Ghana, Box and other types of braids are slowly winning over new customers. “It’s also about client satisfaction.”
Emon has been a stylist since she lived in SVG and continues to harbour an overriding passion for the business, mostly because she loves to see women looking beautiful.
“For me, a big part of their beauty is in their hair. I love helping them look and be the they can be.”
She added that although she is quite aware that these are tough times for hair salons, in and out of our community, their unwavering faith does not allow them to brood over failure.
“We are strong in faith and stay positive, even when it’s not going well…”
Emon and Hazel offer a full range of services at the Divine Beauty, including a Valentine’s package for women and special discounts on haircuts for men and children.
“Our guarantee to all who walk through our doors is that you’ll be respected and appreciated.”
