A Tribute To A Community Builder:
Hilton “Tom” Thomas

With the passing of Hilton Thomas on April 19, at the age of 83, the community lost a champion in the cause of vocational education, employment preparedness, youth empowerment and cultural development.
For much of his life, Tom as he was known to all, dedicated himself to helping to build lives and communities here in Montreal and in his native Trinidad and Tobago.
As a trained welder he knew the value of having “a trade” and he invested his efforts and resources in establishing The Minority Apprenticeship Program (MAP) in the 1980s to assist immigrants and minorities acquire training and placement in these valued professions as well as break long-established barriers in Quebec.
As a long-standing member of the Boilermaker International Union, Tom worked across North America and the Caribbean and used his contacts in the local syndicate here to secure the placement and training of two apprentices, annually under the auspices of MAP.
And he maintained constant pressure on other unions and regulating bodies such as the Construction Commission of Quebec and the Conseil Provincial du Quebec des Metiers de la construction to advocate on behalf of minorities for training and employment.
Tom was also a true, true community man when it came to supporting activities and events especially those that related to promoting and showcasing the culture of his homeland Trinidad and Tobago.
A scholarship fund in his honor will be established at a later date.

Hilton Thomas is survived by his wife Cynthia Wilson by his children: Carla (Andrew), Marie-Louise (Chandran), Willard, Kwame (Karen), Cymanthia (Caleb) and his grandchildren Lian, Kami, Andi, Julia, Jessy, Maxwell and Zurishaddai.
He also leaves to mourn his sisters Anita, Sylvin, Zella, Judith, Jennifer, and brother Willard as well as his nieces and nephews.
The family will receive condolences on Thursday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by the Funeral service at Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Sources, Blvd, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Québec, H9B 2A6. (It will be a live streaming broadcast.)
In lieu of flowers, your expressions of sympathy could be a donation to Diabetic Québec https://www.diabete.qc.ca/en/ in his memory.

Thirteen years has passed
We think about you always
We talk about you still
You have never been forgotten and you never will.
We hold you close within our hearts and there will remain
To walk and guide us through our lives until we meet again.

It’s already 17 long years since you’ve been gone.
Although we cannot control the movement of time,
Nor our own destiny,
Nor the destiny of the one we love.
You may be gone from us but know that you are loved
And will always be remembered.
And live in our hearts forever
Love is timeless. Love you always.
Missed by your mother, children, sister, brothers, family and true friends.
