It was a celebration like no other for the congregation of Union United Church and the hundreds of Montrealers who joined them for their big home-coming service at 3007 Deslisle in St. Henri, on June 14.
After four years of worshipping in NDG, while their 107 year-old building was refurbished, the congregation returned home with a Celebratory Thanksgiving Worship Service led by Rev. Bill Jay and Erene Anthony who served as worship leader.
The service drew worshippers and well wishers from other congregations across the city as well as community leaders and political representatives.
Fueled by a repertoire of specially chosen hymns such as Great Is Thy Faithfulness, There’s a Sweet, Sweet Spirit In This Place, Bless this House, Take Me Back and Praise Him all delivered by the combined choirs of the church under the direction of Kim Sherwood and Moshe Guerrier, the service was a joy-filled session of worship and praise.
Another highlight of the service was a presentation of a Baby Grand Piano to the church, a gift from the internationally acclaimed Dr. Oliver Jones, who made his first public appearance at Union United 75 years ago.
The return home cake was made and donated by Ms Helen David of LaSalle. Dr. Jones and Mrs. Hannah Ofori, wife of current spiritual leader Dr. Emmanuel Ofori, who was away on sabbatical, cut it ceremoniously.
Those who attended the service enjoyed a full compliment of finger foods and other culinary treats prepared and served by members of the congregation.
