With Black History Month 2017 behind us, Black Theatre Workshop continues the journey by bringing the story of Angelique, an enslaved Black Woman to the stage at the Segal Centre.
The story which centers on Marie Josephe Angelique’s tumultuous life as a slave and showed that she was bought for companionship, sexually exploited, physically abused by a jealous wife, was a forced sexual partner with another slave, and involved in a love triangle which lead to accusations of arson and her eventual torture and death.
The fire that Angelique was accused of setting destroyed much of Montreal at the time.
Marie Joseph Angelique is played by Jenny Brizard, a multi-talented Montreal-born artist who studied at the Randolph Academy for The Performing Arts. She appeared in a variety of productions, including on stage in Guys and Dolls at the Segal Center, Playing Doctor by Jasmynn Banks, and The Stall by Judith Leconte.
She also performed with Cirque du Soleil, Best of Broadway, Virtuo Danse Company, Gibson Muriva, and the Just for Laughs Festival. And her screen appearance include Trauma on Radio-Canada, The Disappearance on CTV, and the short film C’est Moi by Howard Davis.
One of our community’s favourites, Tristan D. Lalla, who has become a familiar face on television, in theatre and video games will play the role of Cesar. He is an honours graduate from Dawson College’s professional theatre department.
Mike Payette, who is currently artistic director of Geordie Productions, directed the play which was written by Montreal-born, award-winning playwright Lorena Gale.
