This year, Playmas Montreal Cultural Association is pulling out all the stops to celebrate women’s achievements and reinforce its commitment to women’s equality.
On Sunday, March 5, the organization will be hosting its 13th annual “A Taste of Tea” to celebrate International Woman’s Day and six Black women will be recognized for their controbutions and achievements in politics and policies with the “Woman of Merit Award.”
Among those being awarded this year are: Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, social activist and educator and the first Black woman to be elected to Canada’s House of Commons; Mayor Gracia Kasoki Katahwa, borough mayor of Cote Des Neiges-Notre Dame De Grace; Ms. Ericka Alneus, city councillor for Rosemont; Ms. Tiffany Callender, co-founder, and inaugural CEO of the Federation of African Canadian Economics (FACE); Ms. Joan Kirton, president of The Council for Black Aging; Ms. Joan Lee, president of West Island Black Community Association (WIBCA) and Ms. Sharon Nelson, first vice-president of the Jamaica Association of Montreal.
(Dr. Augustine’s award will be presented at the Montreal Premiere of her documentary film Steadfast – The Messenger and the Message on February 25).
This year’s event themed, “A Taste of Tea, Chocolate and Gospel” will featuring a delightful array of teas from the Caribbean and Morocco to be enjoyed with some delicious treats including Lindt chocolates all accompanied by a scrumptious sweet table compliments of LaFreniere Cakes.
All of this against a backdrop of enchanting Gospel music performed by a lineup of local A-Listers including Zina Edwards, The Fitzpatrick Sisters and Guerschon Auguste.
Tea party lovers are encouraged to dress up for this event and get ready to stop by the photo booth to capture your pose.
