The packed hall in the main Ballroom at 6767 Cote-des-Neiges Road, in the Cote des Neiges/NDG Borough On Sunday, March 5, was a-buzz with the power of the event as Playmas Montreal Cultural Association celebrated women around the world with “A Taste of Tea and All That Jazz,” paying tribute to seven outstanding women of song and stage for their achievements and contributions to the cultural landscape of Quebec and Canada.
The event was made even more special because it was designated an official event of Montreal’s 375th Anniversary celebrations.
Russell Copeman, borough mayor of NDG/Cote des Neiges, together with Jim Beis, borough mayor of Dollard des Ormeaux, and Marvin Rotrand, city councilor of Snowdon were on hand to open the celebrations.
The seven women in the spotlight: Ranee Lee, Michelle Sweeney, Kim Richardson, Geraldine Hunt, Vivianne Dean, Alma Faye Brooks and Zina Edwards basked in the sunshine of the moment as they received their Woman of Merit plaque and adulation of the crowd.
In the midst of the celebration and the tea, together with the expansive sweet table, Joey the Saxman, P&M Dance School and a well-received Motown session from Skipper Dean, treated guests to performances.
The evening was also punctuated by a mini fashion show featuring models who will be on stage at the up-coming Montreal Caribbean Fashion Week.
Organizer Gemma Raeburn-Baynes and her team at Playmas were highly commended by all on hand for an extraordinary event.
