David Austin, will be one of the featured presenters at the upcoming Black Rose Series, that will take place on November 26 and 27 at 3720 Parc Avenue in downtown Montreal.
Austin, whose book Fear of a Black Nation: Race, Sex, and Security and Sixties Montreal, earned him the Casa de las Americas Prize in Caribbean Literature, will speak about the Sir George Williams University Affair and the history of Black radicalism in Montreal.
The former community youth worker is a professor at John Abbott College and continues to write on issues surrounding Pan Africanism, Black radicalism and race relations in North America.
His work include: editor of You Don’t Play with Revolution: The Montreal Lectures of C.L.R. James, and A View for Freedom: Alfie Roberts Speaks on the Caribbean: Cricket, Montreal and C.L.R. James and co-editor of a special edition of the journal Race and Class titled: Canada: Colonial Amnesia and the Legacy of Empire.
Other speakers in the series include Norman Nawrocki, the author of The Anarchist and the Devil do Cabaret, and Dimitri Roussopoulos, the founder of Black Rose Books and the author of The Rise of Cities: Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and other Cities (to be published in February 2017).
