Soca Music takes over the city

Carifiesta Weekend: MONTREAL SOCA MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016

Egbert Gaye

Come Friday July 1 and Saturday July 2 you’d think that Montreal was Trinidad. You see the big carnival/ soca party makes a return to the city in the biggest of ways.
And for the first time in a long time party lovers will get an opportunity to take in some of the biggest names in Caribbean music, including Chutney Soca’s mega superstar Ravi B together with the king of Jab Jab music Tallpree and other soca big names such as Flipo, GBM Nutron, Jamesy P and local fire starter Daddy Ghost.
To make it all happen, organizers have put together two nights of nonstop partying at the
SOCCERPLEX CATALOGNA on the edge of Lachine for a weekend tagged THE MONTREAL SOCA MUSIC FESTIVAL #MSMF.
The event kicks off with real pepper on Friday, July 1, as Ravi B and Flipo come to town for their first ever performances in Montreal.
For those who know, Ravi B is one of the most engaging personalities to hit the soca and chutney soca scene of late. He has been described as charming and versatile, but what shines is his overwhelming talent on stage. With hits such as Dularie, Rum is Meh Lover, Drinka, Dulahin GT, Dutty, Monday, Over Doing It and Prescription, Bread, Ravi B has taken his place among the soca elites in T&T.
Whatever your age or musical preference Ravi B will make this event a Friday nite lime. He’s that kinda guy.
The man he is sharing the stage with is known as Flipo, one of the big up-and-coming stars in T&T. He was here last year and the soca crowd loved him. He loves the soca crowd and is bringing a string of hits like Doh Tell Me Dat, Her Love, Oh Gosh, Last Man Standing and Good Time to keep the party pumping.
Local up-and-comer Soca Kid will represent Montreal.
On Saturday evening (July 2) after the Carifiesta parade, all roads lead back to the Soccerplex. They should rename the place Socaplex because a line up of top Caribbean soca stars will be waiting and ready to turn it into a cauldron of fêting.
Grenada’s acclaimed King of Jab Jab music, Tallpree, is one of the headliners. He is a crowd favorite across the Caribbean, especially in T&T and around the world, with hits such as Old Woman Alone and Wicked Jab.
This year, GBM NUTRON unleashed his mega-hit song, Scene, and sent soca lovers crazy in Trinidad & Tobago. He comes from a musical family (his father is Ancil “Perez” Forde arranger/musician, and brother is Kevon Carter of Imij and Company) and has made a name for himself in the land of soca.
Jamesy P, SVG’s bad boy of soca will also be on stage; he is a crowd pleaser who has earned the love and respect of party lovers in Montreal. Remember his big hit Nookie-Nookie…?
Local soca star Daddy Ghost is right at home sharing the stage with the big names. His love for soca music is contagious, and he brings it every performance. So expect energy and a little bit of madness when Daddy Ghost hits the stage.
Organizers say they’re expecting to add one or two more big name soca stars from Trinidad, Grenada & Barbados to the roster soon. And they have a lineup of some of the best deejays from across Canada to keep the party going all night. They include Dj Oshawn from JUK (T.O) – Massive Vibes (Ott.) – Dj Sweet Chunes (Ott.) – Digital Movements (Mtl.) – Energy Squad (Mtl.) – Production Sounds (Mtl.) – Dj Mr.Vik (Mtl.) – Riddim Bai (T.O) – Anthony G (Mtl.) – Soca Warrior Crew (T.O) – Purple City HD (T.O) – Dj Starkmad (T.O) – Dj Kush (Mtl.) – Dj James Bond (Mtl.) – Platinum Sound (Mtl.) – Dj Nicolas (CKUT Mtl.) – Spice Connection (Mtl.) – Viza (Mtl.) – Dj Vipa (Mtl.\T.O) – Dj Dru (Mtl.) – Brandon Oohlalla (Mtl.) – Soca Syndicate (Mtl.) – Tommy G (T.O) – Whitewine (T.O).
The Montreal Soca Music Festival #MSMF is the brainchild of Anthony G (Ledon Anthony) who is collaborating with a group of Montreal deejays and promoters to add a dash excitement to the Carifiesta celebrations, which is marking its 41st anniversary this year.
Anthony G has accumulated close to two decades of experience promoting music and events on the soca, reggae, dancehall and urban scene in Montreal
