The Mighty Sparrow awarded OBE

The Mighty Sparrow awarded OBE

For  those who grew up listening to his music, or  seen him perform over multiple generations, he will forever be known as the Mighty Sparrow. Over the years, he has earned a multitude of titles including  Dr. Slinger Francisco, now add another: Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) to his name,
From here on he will be known as Dr. Slinger Francisco OBE
Awarded to nationals of Commonwealth nations, an OBE recognizes prominent national or regional figures making distinguished or notable contributions not just to Caribbean, but international culture, in their own specific areas of activity. Francisco’s citation is for services to culture.
Born in Grenada, the calypso stalwart, now closing in on 80 years, has lived over six decades of his life as a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, where he honed his craft, skyrocketed to international fame and has borne the crown and title of Calypso King of the World which, it’s safe to say, he will never relinquish as long as he’s still breathing and performing. But also add the title Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) to his name.
Montrealers will have an opportunity to help celebrate this major honor with the presence of Slinger Francisco OBE, when he makes another stop at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall on Sunday, July 26. It will also be a celebration of his 80th birthday.
Joining the Mighty Sparrow will be funnyman, MC Wassy, six-time Canadian Calypso Monarch Tara ‘Macomere Fifi’ Woods with a tribute to The Calypso King of The World, and local crooner CC Walker.
Howard “Stretch” Carr will also serve as MC… at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall, 7141 Sherbrooke St. West. Doors open at 5 PM, Showtime 6 PM. Tickets are available at Caribbean Curry House 514-733-0828 and other community outlets.
